What are some ways I can make the holidays a little brighter for my father with Alzheimer's?
You can involve your father to whatever level is safe and comfortable in the holiday plans. Maybe he can help you wrap gifts or decorate cookies or seal card. This is a good place to adjust your expectations...will he wrap the gifts or decorate the cookies perfectly? No, but the goal is to make him feel loved and a part of the family not to have picture perfect packages.
Also remember that daily structure is important. Try to maintain your father's regular routine as much as possible i.e. wake up at the same time, same breakfast, same clothes he usually wears, attending the day center, etc.
Get the whole family involved. Talk to everyone in advance and make sure they understand what your father would and would not find comfortable. Remember some family members may not have seen him in months so it will help them and him for everyone to know what works for him now.
Remind everyone that though your father may not remember current events, he's very likely to remember things that happened many years ago so this is a perfect time for everyone to reminisce about the good old days, sing familiar songs.
