CARES Program: Website, Support Group, Library
The Tender has started a new program especially designed for caregivers. It is called CARES which stands for Compassion, Access, Respite, Education and Support. A huge THANK YOU to Melvin J. Wallerstein and The Wallerstein Foundation for Geriatric Life Improvement for their very generous donation that allowed this new program to exist! Thanks also to the Ellis Family Foundation for their generous donation which helped to fund the library!
A primary component of the program is a support group for caregivers that meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30PM here at The Tender.
In addition we have a new website which will provide helpful information as well as act as a venue to get advice and have questions answered. TheTender .org
We also have a lending library containing books focusing on Alzheimer's disease, other forms of dementia and caregiving.
If you would like to attend the support group or would like information or to make a donation

Please consider this as another way of remembering The Tender along with regular donations, bequests, etc.

Try Adult Day Care For Your Loved One
If you are a full-time caregiver, you must make time for yourself. Having a friend or another family member come over to relieve you for a few hours or an afternoon is wonderful, but it is important to have set pre-arranged daily or weekly times you can count on to take care of your own needs.
Many people are uncertain about adult day care or worry about leaving their loved ones, but it is generally a very positive experience for both caregiver and care recipient.
At the Tender, Your loved one can visit for a couple of days a week, or every day depending on your needs, giving you time for errands, job requirements, or rest and relaxation.
If you or your loved one have reservations, here are a few thoughts:
n Never assume your loved one won't go, and don't ask him/her. Just schedule an appointment with our office and take them one day for a visit .
n Even if you think your loved one is a loner and would be miserable around people, try it anyway. Often the person with dementia enjoys the socialization and just being around other people.
n Don't judge the activities according to your own standards. They may seem dull to you, but thrilling and fun to your family member.
n Give adult day care a trial period - two to three weeks is normal.

Our CARES program is off and running, at least in two areas, one, the website…thanks to Hypno Design in Moorestown, and two, our counseling support group… which meets every first Tuesday of each month. We currently have a mix of attendees, some who have a family member attending The Tender day program, some who do not.
We are working… slowly… on the CARES Library, money being the issue.
These two books were recommended to us:
He Used To Be Somebody by Beverly Bigtree Murphy…This is reported to be one of the best case histories of Alzheimer’s Disease that you will find and is the only book about home care of an Alzheimer’s family member. The author is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor who specialized as a case manager with a head trauma and psychiatric caseload. She tells the story of her husband whom she cared for in their home for 14 years until his death. She tells their story with realism, wit and common sense. This is their love story.
ABA Legal Guide for Americans over 50 features most recent changes in healthcare laws and estate planning. According to the Bar Assoc. they say this book is an essential reference for baby boomers and their parents.
Thank You Hypno Designs
