About The Tender
The Tender's History
1977:
Dr. Agnes Gowdey, an innovative physician, began her medical journey during the Great Depression, graduating in 1935 as part of the exclusive four percent of women who completed medical school. She attended the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, the only all-female medical class in the country at that time. In 1977, her visionary leadership led to the founding of The Tender, Inc., marking a significant chapter in our organization’s history. Dr. Gowdey consistently turned positive intentions into meaningful actions throughout her life.
1978:
The subsequent year, 1978, marked a pivotal moment as The Tender received official incorporation as a 501c3 public charity. From its inception, the organization was dedicated to a noble cause: the establishment of a day care center tailored to the unique needs of frail seniors residing in Burlington County.
1998:
In 1998, recognizing the evolving landscape of senior care needs, The Tender embarked on a new phase by introducing its Alzheimer's Respite Program. As the challenges posed by Alzheimer's disease and dementia became increasingly pronounced, The Tender responded with a program exclusively dedicated to dementia care, providing solace not only to clients but also to their families.
2007:
In 2007, another milestone arrived with the launch of the CARES program (Compassion, Access, Respite, Education, Support). This innovative initiative emerged as a lifeline for caregivers, offering them access to a support group, educational resources, specialized training, and a wealth of information. The program also served as a vital tool, connecting individuals and families to essential resources and referrals.
Today:
Today, the narrative of The Tender, Inc. continues to unfold, a testament to the enduring spirit of compassion and unwavering commitment. It stands as a beacon of hope in the lives of countless seniors and their families, all guided by the visionary legacy of its founder, Dr. Agnes Gowdey, whose indelible impact continues to touch the hearts of those embraced by The Tender's mission.
